Common causes include dirty condenser coils (the #1 overlooked issue), a failing evaporator fan, a faulty thermostat, or a refrigerant leak. If the freezer is cold but the fridge section isn't, the evaporator fan or defrost system is usually to blame.

Buzzing or humming usually points to the compressor or condenser fan. Rattling can be a loose drain pan or vibrating condenser coils. Clicking often means the compressor is struggling to start — which can indicate a more serious issue worth addressing quickly.

The most common cause is a clogged defrost drain — ice buildup blocks drainage and water overflows onto the floor. A cracked water line or a faulty inlet valve (if you have an ice maker or water dispenser) can also cause leaks.

A faulty temperature control thermostat or a damaged door gasket letting cold air from the freezer into the fridge section are the usual culprits. It can also result from a malfunctioning damper that controls airflow between compartments.

It depends on the repair cost versus replacement cost. Refrigerators typically last 12-18 years. If the repair is less than half the cost of a comparable new unit, repair usually makes sense — especially given current appliance prices and supply chain delays.

Check the water supply line first — it may be kinked or frozen. Other causes include a clogged water filter (replace every 6 months), a faulty water inlet valve, or a failed ice maker module. Most ice maker repairs are straightforward.
