To clean it properly:

Remove the filter assembly. On most models (Bosch, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE), you’ll turn the cylindrical portion counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then lift straight up. Some older models have a self-cleaning filter you don’t remove, but these are increasingly rare.

Rinse under hot water. Use a soft brush or old toothbrush to scrub away trapped food particles, grease, and the slimy biofilm that develops. Pay special attention to the mesh screen—this is where odor-causing bacteria love to hide.

Check and Clean the Spray Arms

Remove both the lower and upper spray arms (they usually just pull off or require removing a small cap). Hold them up to the light and look through each hole. Use a toothpick or small wire to clear any blockages. Rinse thoroughly under running water.

Deep Clean the Door Gasket and Edges

The rubber gasket around the door creates a watertight seal, but it’s also a magnet for mold, mildew, and trapped food particles. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the entire gasket, then use a cloth or old toothbrush to scrub all the folds and crevices.

Don’t forget the bottom edge of the door and the lip at the bottom of the tub opening. Food and grease accumulate here and often get missed during regular cleaning. You’d be surprised how much gunk hides in these spots, especially if you pre-rinse dishes (which actually makes modern dishwashers work less effectively, but that’s another topic).

Run a Vinegar Cycle

With the filter and spray arms cleaned and reinstalled, it’s time for a cleaning cycle. Place a dishwasher-safe bowl filled with 2 cups of white vinegar on the top rack. Run a complete hot water cycle with no dishes or detergent.

The vinegar cuts through grease, dissolves mineral deposits from Michigan’s hard water, and neutralizes odors. Some people worry about vinegar damaging the dishwasher, but occasional use for cleaning is perfectly safe. It’s actually gentler than many commercial dishwasher cleaners.

Follow Up with a Baking Soda Refresh

After the vinegar cycle completes, sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher. Run a short hot water cycle. This further deodorizes and helps tackle any stubborn stains on the interior surfaces.

The one-two punch of vinegar followed by baking soda is more effective than either alone. The vinegar handles acidic buildup and grease, while the baking soda addresses alkaline residues and provides additional deodorizing power.

Clean the Drain and Air Gap

If odors persist after the above steps, you might have a drainage issue. Check under your sink for the dishwasher drain hose. Make sure it has a high loop or is connected to an air gap (that small chrome cylinder on your countertop near the sink). This prevents dirty water from flowing back into the dishwasher.

If you have an air gap, unscrew the cap and remove any debris inside. This simple five-minute task solves a surprising number of odor problems.
